2^nd grade syllabus

Reading-

     The 2^nd grade Reading program is Scholastic Literacy Place.  We will be studying Reading in the following areas:

          Print awareness

                Phonological awareness

                Letter- Sound relationships

                Word identification

                Fluency

Text Structures/ Literary Concepts

Variety of texts

Vocabulary development

Comprehension

Literary Response

Inquiry/Research

Culture

Listening and Speaking

Writing/ Language/ Spelling

                The 2^nd grade Writing curriculum will be a combination of Scholastic and Houghton Mifflin English.  We will be studying Writing in the following areas:

     Penmanship/Capitalization/Punctuation

        Spelling

        Composition/Process

        Purposes

        Grammar/Usage/Mechanics

        Evaluation

        Inquiry/Research

        Connections

        Literature and Writing

Science-

     The 2^nd grade Science curriculum is Harcourt.  In 2^nd grade the studies will focus on:

     Life Science

                -Living things grow and change

                -Homes for living things

        Earth Science

                -Exploring earth’s surface

                -Space

                -Weather

        Physical Science

                -Energy and Motion

                -Exploring Matter

        Health

                -People Grow and Change

                -Bones and Muscles

                -Heart and Lungs

Math-
