Responsibility and academics are the main focus of Fourth Grade.  Each subject is taught in a way that will complement the rest of the curriculum.  The following is an overview of the Fourth Grade curriculum:

Reading

Independent reading is a crucial factor for growth in Fourth Grade.  Silent reading helps them grow in their fluency and comprehensions levels.  In class, we study a variety of literary types (genres), focusing on skills to aid in comprehension.   Students are tested on their reading skills and knowledge of 4^th Grade reading curriculum by the TAKS test in early April.

Language

Writing well is the main focus of Fourth Grade Language.  Students are taught the writing process, from planning to presentation.  We work on six important traits of great writing:  focus, sentence fluency, organization, developed ideas, voice, and conventions (spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar).  Students are tested over their understanding of the 4^th Grade writing curriculum and their writing ability by the TAKS test in late February.

Math

Thinking and problem solving are the key words for Fourth Grade Mathematics.  Students take what they’ve learned in the previous years and begin to apply that knowledge, as well as acquire new skills.  Students are taught through a variety of methods – hands-on, memorization, and old-fashioned drill and practice.  Students are tested over the 4^th Grade Mathematics curriculum in early April.

Science

Science is exciting for Fourth Graders!  Students learn a variety of scientific knowledge through investigation, demonstration, and reading.  The science curriculum incorporates knowledge and skills from reading and language.  Although students are not tested by the state in Fourth Grade, they are in Fifth Grade. 

Social Studies

Fourth Grade social studies covers Texas History.  We study the geography of Texas, its history, people and culture.  We also compare Texas to the rest of the world.  Again, reading and language skills are important to the understanding of Texas History.
